Marta BORRELL FIJO
Student and activist
Marta is now 18 years old, she was born in Seville on October 28, 2003 and studied at the Colegio Aljarafe. She currently has a scholarship to enroll the innovative Minerva University where she is studying international relations and politique. She studied in 11th grade at Three Rivers High School, Michigan, where she participated in an international student exchange program organized by the United States Government.
Marta is affected by social injustice and from an early age she has shown interest on being an active part in the search for solutions. As the host of the documentary, "A light in the darkness", she has had the chance to learn about the problems threatening education in developing countries and she has also had the opportunity to discuss solutions among those personalities that are relevant in the education world. Raised in a family of filmmakers, she has found a platform to share her thoughts through documentaries. Her experiences have allowed her to speak at the United Nations, the highest institutional level. She is very touched by the precariousness of life and believes the only solution to poverty, social injustice and gender discrimination is an improvement of the education that these children get.In the documentary "A light in the darkness" Marta travelled to Mozambique, one of the poorest countries in the World.
She spent her summer in IBO, an island on Northern Mozambique. Ibo is a town where a system of sustainable education has been running for years. A place where charity and free help are considered the worst stimulus for growth. After this trip, Marta conducted a range of interviews in hopes of understanding why, in such a globalized world, there is such high lack of education that paralyzes people’s development. It becomes abundantly clear that today's youth will provide both research and solutions for strengthening education in the future. Back home, Marta drew conclusions about her experience and used a variety of venues to deliver her message.
The most prestigious and far-reaching venue was the United Nations, where Marta had the chance to propose thoughtful solutions to the education crisis around the world during the International Day of Education in 2020. That was only the first of many other events.
