Patrick MICHELY
"Ocean Watcher" at Longitude 181
Computer Scientist, scuba diving instructor, and trainer in underwater biology, Patrick is passionate about underwater biology. He has attended several editions of the Universities of the Earth with wonder, attentiveness but also with a growing anxiety. It is precisely after one of these editions at UNESCO and at the request of a lecturer that he decided to become one of the scientists' relays.
He held booths alone during ecological events to inform the public about the impact of man on the marine world. He intervened in debates on the sustainable consumption of fish, during a festival on food, by presenting the food chain, the impacts of the various methods of fishing, the regulation on the labelling of the stalls of fish shops... For several years, he has been an active member of ocean protection associations such as Bloom, Sea Shepherd, Tara Ocean Foundation and Longitude 181. Since 2021, within Ocean Academy, Longitude 181's ocean school, he has been educating students in their schools on ocean protection.
Now, he relays information from scientists, surrounded by motivated ocean watchers, the ocean watchers are the active members of Ocean Academy. From primary school to bac+2 (hogh school senior +2 years), he has had the pleasure of informing more than 700 students and raising awareness about the protection of the oceans through interventions on the blue planet, sharks, sperm whales and waste at sea. The interaction with the students is essential, to make them dream about the ocean, to make them love the underwater world so that they protect it.
