Born in 1954 in Valence, François Sarano holds a doctorate in oceanography. From 1985 to 1997, he worked on the Calypso with Captain Cousteau's team. As a diver, scientific advisor and mission leader, he participated in some twenty expeditions and twenty-five films in the "Rediscovery of the World" series. Between 1999 and 2001, he was scientific advisor for the Deep Ocean Odyssey program, where he led the "Great White Shark" expedition.

In 2000, he co-founded the Longitude 181 association, whose objective is the protection and fair management of marine resources. Between 2001 and 2003, he was in charge of the Fisheries and Fishery Resources Department at WWF-France. He is one of the promoters of the concept of Concerted Exploitation and Management Units (UEGC), for a sustainable management of halieutic resources by fishermen.

From 2004, he collaborated with Jacques Perrin and Jacques Cluzaud for the film Oceans (César 2011 for best documentary) and for the series of four documentaries The People of the Oceans. He shares his passion for the marine world through his books and conferences. He is an advisor to the SeaOrbiter project, an international ocean station imagined by the architect and oceanographer Jacques Rougerie. Since 2013, he has been studying sperm whales off Mauritius.
