32. For a trustworthy digital world

Saturday, November 26 • 09h30 > 11h00

The emergence of the digital age is a major transition for humanity. In three decades, it has disrupted society in multiple dimensions: information, communication, commerce, industry, education, music... It has become inconceivable to think of the world and our daily lives without computers and cell phones.

But are we ready to face this digital revolution ethically, physically, psychologically and ecologically? Because the omnipotence of algorithms comes at a very high cost. It exerts a relentless power over individuals, gradually taking away their freedom and damaging social relationships. And its effects on the environment are increasingly well documented: accelerated consumption of natural resources (rare earths) and energy, increased CO2 emissions caused by the massive use of servers, low recycling rate...

For several years now, a trustworthy digital technology, designed to have a positive impact on society and the environment, has aimed to correct the excesses of this digital revolution. The Liberty project, for example, aims to give Internet users back control over their data. And the retailer Cdiscount is engaged in massive waste reduction and repair operations.
