Currently, 33% of the world's soils are moderately or severely deteriorated, and up to 40% in Africa. After years of overexploitation of soils and use of pesticides, the time has come to act.
The sustainability of the world's agricultural system depends on it: soils must be restored to their original health, but this may take time, as it takes nearly a millennium to form a centimeter of fertile soil! As for artificially recreating a soil, it is not really possible because there are so many parameters: living soils are home to up to a quarter of the Earth's biodiversity, and they are the second most important carbon sink on Earth, after the oceans.
To strengthen their resilience, solutions exist, in addition to the reduction or elimination of pesticides: mulching, which consists of covering soils with plants, agroforestry and the restoration of hedges in crops, the creation of ecological corridors to link wild areas via fields and vineyards.
The responsibility for soil resilience lies with us, in our lifestyles and consumption patterns. Preserving and regenerating soils means landing and regaining our footing on the ground.
